Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honour the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour. -Leviticus 19:15
Good morning and God bless you. It is yet rather cold in the bluff city but my heart is warm with the love of God.
On last evening my wife and I watched a movie that brought tears to our eyes. “The Lena Baker story”. It was about a young woman unjustly charged with murder and executed.
The man she was accused of murdering had become her torturer, who constantly forced himself upon her and even kidnapped her multiple times, once taking her to another state.
While trying to escape he pulled a gun which they tussled over resulting in it discharging and killing him.
A jury of her peers found her guilty. Lena was a black woman in 1944 Georgia. Her peers were 12 white men, the distinction is made because this is an example of Jim Crow justice.
It is clear here that justice must have had her back turned. But even in this we are called to love and take to heart that this is a spiritual malady that seeks to separate us using a rather small distinction.
As Christians we are to call out true injustice, while not giving any room to pretenders. All this while knowing that the injustice of the past (even yesterday is the past) discourages and makes the usually reasonable, unreasonable.
But even injustice towards the guilty is wrong, as the punishment should fit the crime and categorizing anyone based on what someone else has done is injustice personified.
One day we will all be called into account for our lives, let’s love and fairly administer our dominion authority or we will be held accountable.
