And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. -2 Samuel 24:24
Good morning and terrific Thursday to you!
The passage referenced tells the story of David trying to halt a plague in Israel—a plague that had come as a result of his own disobedience. To stop it, an act of obedience was required. Following the instructions given through the prophet, David sought a place to offer a sacrifice.
He arrived at the threshing floor of Araunah, where the angel had ceased his destruction, intending to build an altar there. Araunah, upon learning of the king’s purpose, generously offered the space and everything needed for the sacrifice at no cost.
However, David declined the offer, as he understood a profound truth that many overlook: the principle of sacrifice is that it must come at a personal cost. David knew that a true sacrifice must come from the one making it.
What costs you nothing holds no value before God, and an anointing gained without cost is worth exactly what was paid for it.
