And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;

We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:

               -Daniel 9:4-5

Good morning and TGIF!  Daniel the prophet offers a vital lesson on humility in these scriptures. He draws a parallel between David’s prayer (Ps 51), where David acknowledges not only his own sins but also the sins of those who came before him.

Many people either deny being affected by their ancestors' sins or are quick to highlight the faults of others while conveniently overlooking their own.

In verse 4, Daniel first confesses his own sins, whether they were committed intentionally or unintentionally. Then in verse 5, he acknowledges the sins of others, including those of past generations.

Israel’s captivity is a result of both past and present sins. The enemy seeks to keep us unaware that iniquities (unforgiven sins of forefathers) and transgressions (current personal or communal sins) have significant effects on our lives.

Because of these generational sins, often referred to as generational curses, we must actively counteract them. This is done by confessing and seeking forgiveness for the sins we are aware of and humbly asking for cleansing from those we may not be aware of.

Go fellowship this weekend, we all need it.
