And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto Jerusalem; Thy birth and thy nativity is of the land of Canaan; thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother an Hittite. -Ezekiel 16:3
"Good morning and a happy Monday to you! The passage portrays the father of God’s people as an Amorite. Historical accounts describe the Amorites as a people who valued learning and intellectual pursuits.
God invokes the Amorites to highlight Israel’s pride in disregarding His instructions. Their mother is identified as a Hittite, a group known for their ability to negotiate, form alliances, and shape narratives to their advantage. Their talent for gathering and bending information often left them viewed as shrewd and self-interested.
When the traits of a proud Amorite and a calculating Hittite are combined, the result is a person driven by self-importance and vulnerable to corrupt thinking.
Arrogance and manipulation are both condemned by the Lord. Likewise, we must guard our hearts so that neither gains influence in our lives.
