And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob. -Genesis 27:41
Good morning and happy hump day to you! There are three seemingly unrelated figures in the Bible who, when studied together, reveal a longstanding demonically driven agenda rooted deep in their shared ethnicity and culture. These figures all stem from the same group—the Edomites—descendants of Esau, the twin brother of Jacob. The three individuals in question are Esau, Haman, and Herod. Their common trait, aside from their ancestry, was their determination to destroy the Jewish people.
We are familiar with Esau, but Haman, found in the book of Esther, is a key antagonist who sought to annihilate the Jews due to a perceived insult. Then there is the more widely known Herod, or rather the Herodian dynasty, who ruled Israel under Roman authority. The first Herod fulfilled prophecy by ordering the massacre of Jewish infant boys (Matthew 2:18).
Esau’s disdain was evident when he dismissed the value of his father’s blessing. This scorn, fueled by the perceived slight from Jacob, created a deep-rooted hatred that persisted through the generations, including the Edomites’ hostility toward the Israelites as they left Egypt.
The Edomites later betrayed the Israelites by siding with the Babylonians. By the time of the Persian Empire, Haman had risen to a prominent position and continued the animosity.
The key takeaway is that there is such danger in having short term memories. Not knowing historically the character of those who now appear before your door with bread, you would miss the poison therein. People like the demons that influence them often change their words and strategies, but the goals do not change.
Old folks would say a leopard cannot change its spots though it may change the place it hides while hunting.
