When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. -Matthew 27:24
Good morning and tremendous Tuesday to you! The scripture above equated to a frivolous attempt by the Roman Governor Pontinus Pilate to void himself of any responsibility of the crucifying of Christ.
Notice how Pilate added to his statement the phrase “see ye to it.” Like many Christian do today they emphasize their washing of their hands by saying “People gonna sin”. This cop-out grows to become why witness to them? You cannot hide behind, “it’s not my fault”.
Scripture assigns three things to us Authority, responsibility, and accountability.
We have the authority to act, the responsibility to act, and the accountability if we fail to act.
Pilate had the authority, which came with responsibility. His failure to act, in an effort to protect his legacy and avoid being viewed negatively in history, ultimately left him accountable.
Similarly, many Christians today, when confronted with moral issues, try to wash their hands of responsibility. While their hands may appear clean on the outside, the stain on their soul remains. One day, the Lord will ask questions like those in Matthew 7, and many will respond as if they never knew. But He will speak the devastating words that reveal their hands may be clean, yet the stain lingers. "If you did this to the least of these, you did it to Me."
