And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. -Deuteronomy 28:2
But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: -Deuteronomy 28:15
Good morning and happy hump day to you!
The greatest danger of the prosperity gospel is that it promises the rewards (the “thens”) without emphasizing the conditions (the “ifs”).
In Deuteronomy 28:2, we find the first “then,” which is the blessing that comes as a direct result of obedience to God.
Many preachers declare these blessings without insisting on a life of righteousness, offering rewards without requiring commitment or effort. It's like receiving the prize without participating in the race. This is false teaching, and if you hear it, you should run, not walk, away from such deception.
Deuteronomy 28:15 warns of the consequences for those who embrace this false doctrine of blessings and salvation without repentance or righteous living. This scripture, too, refers to a "then," but instead of blessings, it points to curses.
In both passages, the key condition—the "if"—is summed up in the word "hearken." In old English, "hearken" means to listen and obey. Many hear, but the journey from hearing to hearkening requires obedience.
Beloved God is not mocked. Sowing and reaping is one of the most profound truths of God.
