3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
-Romans 6
Good morning and welcome to
blessed Thursday. Upfront there is an identity crisis in the body of Christ.
Not just in terms of United Methodist calling out Methodist, Baptist calling out Church of Christ, Episcopalian calling out Roman Catholics, etc…
The identity crises goes deeper than that and it is no secret to those who haven’t professed Christ. They use the conflict as a reason not to accept Him. So not only are we unidentifiable within, but also without.
The question of identification can not be addressed by those on the outside of our faith and not even within the body, our denomination or our local church.
The resolution rest mainly with us. Jesus called us His sheep saying we hear His voice and as such we should hear and do what His voice says.
This is the beginning of first being identified in Christ that the world sees. When our habits line up with our profession.
What is even more comforting is that before we knew who we were God identified us as worthy of His love.
So worthy in truth that He gave His son to die for our sins. Christ therefore identified with us by taking on our sin and dealing with it triumphantly on the cross. Then as He died with the sin on Him, we must identify that death by doing as Christ did, die to sin.
Dying to sin helps us to change focus from guilt which ultimately enhances our ability to love and love more than anything will identify us to Christ across denominations, secular establishments, and skeptics.
