I said, "I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle, so long as the wicked are in my presence." -Psalms 39:1
I was reading this chapter of Psalms this morning and got stuck at verse one. The part that caused me to pause is that last stanza. It seemed that the writer put special emphasis on being quiet while around those he surmised were wicked.
As I pondered on it I thought of a phrase I had been told not many years ago that is certainly applicable here.
“Every dog that brings a bone...” so it may have seemed that the psalmist (had to use the word, lol) recognized the extra need to guard his mouth in the presence of certain people.
This is not to negate that you should always guard your heart to protect your tongue, but around certain people this is particularly prudent. The writer further said that when the wicked are present put a muzzle on😂.
How many people would we like to muzzle, yet in this instance it is self muzzling that is stressed.
